On April 5, 2016, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue joined students from the University of the District of Columbia School of Law to discuss criminal justice reforms and potential justice reinvestment initiatives. The discussion was hosted by UDC Law Professor Edwina Dorch.
As part of the discussion, Deputy Mayor Donahue highlighted the Bowser Administration’s decision to assume operation of the Correctional Treatment Facility, which houses minimum and medium security inmates, female offenders, juveniles being adjudicated as adults and other special populations. The Administration is investing $5.9 million to cover costs associated with the changeover, which will allow for greater services to DC Jail inmates prior to returning to society. The current contract with Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) expires on January 30, 2017.
