Mayor Bowser Launches District Streetcar

Monday, February 29, 2016
2.4 mi line launches after a decade of planning, expanding transportation options on growing H St. Corridor

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif Dormsjo and other District officials celebrated the official opening of the H/Benning DC Streetcar line for passenger service.  Today marks the first time the DC Streetcar has been in operation since the original system took its final ride in 1962.

“We are excited to get DC Streetcar up and running. Streetcar expands public transportation options for residents and visitors, and connects neighborhoods,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We thank the businesses and residents along the H Street / Benning corridor for their patience and support leading up this historic day.”

Today’s long-awaited launch fulfills a promise by Mayor Bowser to start passenger service for a project that initially began in the Anthony Williams Administration. In 2015, Mayor Bowser tasked DDOT to finish the project and begin transporting passengers after clearing all safety inspections.

“When Mayor Bowser charged DDOT to get the streetcar rolling, our number one priority has been to open a safe and reliable system that will support additional transportation options in the District,” said DDOT Director Dormsjo. “We are grateful to DCFEMS Chief Gregory Dean who worked closely with the agency to ensure the system was safe for the public. Today’s streetcar system will enhance mobility options for District residents, workers and visitors.”

The inaugural 2.4-mile DC Streetcar line services eight stops between Union Station and the intersection of Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue, near RFK Stadium.  The H Street / Benning Road Streetcar is the first part of an eight-mile line that will span the District east to west. Service runs Monday through Saturday, including holidays. Hours of service include:

  • Monday-Thursday: 6 am – midnight
  • Friday: 6 am – 2 am
  • Saturday: 8 am – 2 am
  • Sunday: Closed. (Sunday service may be phased in at a later date.)
  • Holidays: 8 am – 10 pm

During the initial operations, passengers will enjoy free access to DC Streetcar service. After the free introductory period, DDOT will review both the fare policy and the option for Sunday service.
