Mayor Bowser Launches Summer Strong DC 2016 Programs

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated the launch of 2016 Summer programming, including the official opening of the 2016 Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) application and additional information are available at summer.dc.gov.

“Our goal is to make sure our youngest residents have a fun, fit, and strong summer,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We have several great opportunities for youth between the ages of 3 to 24 to learn and grow. I encourage families to take advantage of the fantastic programming the District offers to our young people.”

MBSYEP is celebrating the program’s 38th year, providing District residents with high-quality work experience, a paycheck, and exposure to careers and mentors. Expanding opportunities for young adults to gain meaningful work experience is a top priority for the Bowser Administration. Mayor Bowser has pushed for the permanent expansion of MBSYEP to include 22-24 year old District residents. Recently, the Council voted to expand the program for two years.

“MBSYEP supports our young residents on their pathway to the middle class,” said Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity Courtney R. Snowden. “Many of our young people need an opportunity to gain the work experience it takes to jump start a career, and MBSYEP provides that opportunity for our youth. We are focused on strengthening this critical employment program to ensure MBSYEP 2016 is the best year yet.”

In addition to MBSYEP, this week also marked the launch of registration for DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) summer camps, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) summer school and other programs. All of this summer’s activities can be viewed on a single, searchable map on summer.dc.gov. The map will continue to be updated with new opportunities and events throughout summer.

“Before we know it, summer will be upon us,” said Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles. “Research shows that students who don’t participate in summer learning activities lose ground over the summer compared to peers that do. Here in the District we have so many options for our residents to have fun, enriching experiences to learn and grow in the summer months.”
